Romance Novel Title: Laird of the Manor

The Tale:

Enchanting and alluring, Highland Laird Iain Buchanan was born to a clan of warriors. Living in the 21st century, he embraces his Caledonian heritage by reenacting the acts of his ancestors pasts each year in the Scottish Highland Games! He still lives in his family’s ancient manor housed in Northern Scotland aka the Scottish Highlands.

Artist Comments:

Image took about 20-25 hours over 3 weeks to manipulate.

I looked at the covers of Karen Marie Moning’s books for inspiration ([link]) and I spent way too much time listening to Blake ([link]) and Celtic Thunder to get *inspired* ([link])

**NOTE: yes, ALL parts of the graphic are manipulated together: Florent, Florent’s Shadow, the sky, the cuffs, the kilt, the manor, the Highland beach, the tattoo, the lights etc. etc. etc. Nothing came together, I composed the entire thing! **

Highlander Contest Entry #1: The Highlander’s Heir

Today I have the pleasure of presenting the first of the Highlander Novel Cover Contest entries. Be sure to vote by leaving a comment on the entries that you enjoy! The winner is determined by the amount of vocal support they receive before the end of the month!

Romance Novel Title: The Highlander’s Heir

The Tale:

Patrick Kelley, the bastard grandson of the Laird Joseph Kelley knew only two things. He needed a wife and he needed an heir. The passing of Laird Joseph Kelley left Patrick with a dilapidated castle in Edinbourough, a stack of debts, and responsibilities he couldn’t ignore. The fields needed new tenants and tenants meant new homes built with money he didn’t have. Despite his severe loathing of London Society he would have to venture there to find and wed an heiress.

Emiline Pembroke was a plump cousin and companion of the beautiful Jessamine Pembroke, the only heir to the fortune of the Earl, Byron of Pembroke. The Earl’s estate in Wales was Emiline’s preferred setting for her quiet and uneventful life as a spinster at the age of 26. Her cousin’s coming-out ball would only be the 1st tiresome event of the next season in London, where she would dutifully sit and sip in the companions’ corner, unnoticed and unwanted.

Highlander Romance Novel Cover Contest

I was hoping to have an example cover to share with everyone like I had with the Pirate contest - but my friend who owns a kilt is being a little shy at the moment. Perhaps if you leave some encouragement he’d be more inclined to don it and show of his legs!

About:

This contest runs from January 1st, 2009 to January 30th, 2009. Winners will be the entry with the most unique user comments on their blog post detailing their novel cover. Additional votes will be acquired in a Twitter poll on the 30th and the winner will be announced on the 31st of January. Good luck! I can’t wait to see what creative things you do!

Prize:

$10 gift card to Amazon. Go ahead and buy yourself a kilted warrior or three. I hear their swords are mightier in bed than they are out of bed!

Rules of Entry:

Each contest is considered fresh. This means previous winners are welcome to join in all the fun again if they so choose.

1. The guy in your photo must be someone you know. Don’t bother submitting Patrick Dempseys in mini-kilts or Mel Gibsons in war paint. I’ve seen these warriors in action - I want fresh meat!

2. You must do your own photo editing. It is on your honor as a Highlander!

3. He must be bare-chested. Show those bulging pectoral muscles and rippling abs!

4. In addition, we should see plaid (or a kilt) somewhere in the cover. Bonus points for bagpipes, tattoos, swords, castles, and lochs.

5. The image should be: 468 pixels wide by 420 pixels tall.

6. Must include a name for your novel, like mine was entitled Her Highlander. We’re a superstitious lot, Highlanders, and a sword without a name will not slay many men in battle.

7. Tell us your Highlander story behind the photo. A hearty mug of ale goes great with a boastful tale. We want Glory and Happily Ever Afters in the making.

8. Submit to the wee lass, Keira at reviewromancenovel@yahoo.com

To Do List: Save the World, Win a Contemporary

Sarah from Smart Bitches and Jane from Dear Author are co-hosting another contest. The prizes are pretty sweet and well worth the time to get involved.

First things first, what contemporary romance started this contest?

The answer to that is Victoria Dahl’s debut novel Talk Me Down. The heroine in this novel, Molly Jenkins, is an erotica romance author. She publishes under a pen name, not because she’s ashamed of writing erotica, but because she knows how awkward it would be for family and friends. Molly Jenkins leaves city life to return to her small home town after some unpleasant activity with her law enforcer ex-honey/stalker. A small inheritance makes moving back home easy, but Molly is stuck. She’s not inspired to write again until running into an old high school hunk, Ben Lawson, now chief of police.

Sarah says this about the sexual interactions within this book: “This, folks, is realistic sex. Gritty sex. Passionate pent-up sex. And most of all? FUN sex.” While the Romantic Times reviewer labeled the heroine “as a dog in heat.” In response to the RT comment Jane says, “I’m not going to even try to rebut it because that’s one of the things I liked best about this story.” Based on these different reviews, the conclusion to be drawn from this is that the sex is frank, up front, and enjoyable if you like your sex in romance novels to be frank and up front.

Pirate Contest Entry: The Secret Weapon

“So here it is -finally! I’m not even going to say how long this took.” - Paul

Paul, this was well worth the wait! I’m so glad you managed to get everything sorted out with your computer and software!

There’s no billowy shirt in this entry, but I think you’ll agree that we got a lot of yummy goodness anyway! Johnny Depp eat your heart out! The creativity goes even farther than the cover too - just read the story behind this cover! I think choosing the winner will be tough.

Edit: I have a full version of this - and everything has been rendered to look like the photo realistic painting style found on most romance covers.

Design and Model: Paul
Synopsis Author: Dex Xu

Synopsis:

With each setting sun, Gareth Falconheart stands at the bow of his ship, the Black Talon, scanning the horizon with piercingly dark eyes. A pirate by title as well as in nature, he has taken many a life and even more innocent hearts throughout his journeys of the seas. Orphaned at the age of three, Gareth has finally found his place. With dangerously handsome features and the belief that he needs nothing and no one, Gareth’s life is complete. Or is it?

A few miles behind, Wolfmoon sails swiftly, captained by the headstrong yet breathtakingly stunning Sabra de Ivonlea. With the ship’s first mate Sculley by her side, Sabra operates on the promise she made at her father’s deathbed.

The mission: destroy their sworn enemy, the Black Talon. When the two ships clash in battle and their captains meet face to face for the first time, the sparks that flew far surpassed those of the booming cannons.

As the war rages on, the desperate couple must also fight against their forbidden love. Can their rapidly evolving feelings overcome a vendetta of a hundred years? Or will their souls be destroyed in the aftermath of a prophecy fulfilled? Whatever the outcome, no one would ever forget the day that Gareth Falconheart and Sabra de Ivonlea locked gazes in The Secret Weapon.

Yar! This be arr first entry to the Present Your Very Own Pirate Contest. What say ye? Is his shirt perfectly billowy? Is his beard scraggly enough for ye? Does he make ye want to cry out full rammin’ speed ahead?

When Sasha first told me she was entering, I got really excited. Sasha’s very clever with photoshop and editing programs. I think you’ll find that she lives up to the hype. Just check out the goodies below!

Model: Kevin, who is really French.
Designer: Sasha

Romance Novel Title: Luring the Rouge

Pirate’s Tale:

Rouge is my own special 17th Century French pirate. He got his name from a woman who couldn’t read English too well. She meant to call him a “Rogue” because he’s a playfully mischievous scoundrel.
But looking at her French to English dictionary, she ended up with “Rouge,” which suited him just fine because he makes all the wenches and ladies alike, blush!

Are ye hot and bothered? Aye, I not know about ye, but I’d be wanting to read this piratey novel! Great job, Sasha!

Present Your Very Own Pirate Contest

Ahoy! Pay attention ye scurvy scum!

There be treasure in them there hills!

As I have been discussing potential cuties for gracing the cover of romance novels, romance novel covers have been on my mind. No surprise there. Grin.

The other night I was talking with my pirate friend here on skype and superstitiously snapped his photo while mid chat. Twenty minutes play time in photoshop and I created this - my very own pirate cover, billowy white shirt and all. The quality of my image is based on the quality of the other person’s webcam. Your entry does not need to be super sharp, it can be blurry too. 72 dpi is more than enough.

Argh, and now it be yer turn. I want to see yer pirates!

Prize:

$10 gift card to Amazon to buy yourself some pirate loving of your choice. Buy used and get more than one pirate lover. (Ye kno’ terms like prepare t’ be boarded lass and full ramming speed get you all ho’ and bothered under th’ covers. We pirates are like that.)

Rules of Entry:

1. The guy in your photo must be someone you know. Ye can’t be about submitting a celebrity, aye, I no’ want to be seeing any of them Jack Sparrows!

2. You must do your own photo editing as that be the pirate code.

3. He must wear a white shirt. Got to have that white shirt, the more billowy the better.

4. The image should be: 468 pixels wide by 420 pixels tall.

5. Must include a name for your novel, like mine was entitled the Pensive Pirate. We’re a superstitious lot, pirates, and a ship without a name be a bad omen.

6. Optional: Discuss your pirate plot and novel or reasoning behind photo. We pirates like to boast and nothing beats a grand tale.

7. Submit to the fine lass, Keira at reviewromancenovel@yahoo.com

All entries will be uploaded in a post the day following their submission. Winner will be selected by getting the most comments in favor of their image and contacted by email. A poll might be included based on how many submissions are received. In that case the winner will be decided solely on vote percentage and the comments will be all in good fun dissecting the photos. If a poll is used voting will take place in the 24 hours following the deadline date.

Submission deadline: November 30th, 2008.

Can you think of a better way to be grateful in November then to win some pirate booty and view a plethora of guys in white shirts?

Voting, if done, will take place December 1st, 2008 and end midnight California time. All comments must be submitted by this time too if a poll is not used. The sooner you send in your entry the more chances you’ll have to get comments!

And now it is time to walk the plank ye landlubbers and get to hopping!

Buy Contemporary - Win Some Cash

That’s right cash! You could win $100 Amazon prize money and one of 10 copies of Flat Out Sexy by Erin McCarthy. The loot as they say is up for grabs. This contest is sponsored by Sarah from Smart Bitches, Jane from Dear Author, Berkeley, and Erin McCarthy.

So how do you enter?

Sarah and Jane have posts up about their contest simply comment in their posts and you’ll be entered. Make sure to comment in both for two chances to win.

To win the $100 Amazon Gift certificate you will have to spread the word and post the widget or banner somewhere.

That said I’m all up for the prize money and the book have commented and now spread the word on contemporary romance! Think of all the books one could buy with the gift card! Swoon.

Why contemporary?

Contemporary romance is a tough genre right now. It’s become diluted with paranormal to keep it afloat as more and more readers want something else. Partly I think this is because readers want escape from their daily stresses and problems and contemporary has a hard time doing this as it is all about the current daily stresses, situations, and problems of life. That isn’t to say reading historical or some other romantic sub-genre won’t cause you to relive situations that parallel normal life. Historical romance is known to support female characters that act remarkably like contemporary women.

Why Flat Out Sexy?

Because Jane and Sarah both love it! It’s a NASCAR novel, which might be a deterrent for some, but with the double promotion and sponsorship I can pretty much guarantee this is a book worth reading. Briefly summarized, Flat Out Sexy involves a single widowed mother and a younger man. There’s also a bit of a Romeo and Juliet blood feud in the background that started with their fathers. Sarah has a bit to say on this so check our her review.

What are you waiting for? Go out and get your racing stripes! Good luck!

Review: Yours Until Dawn by Teresa Medeiros

Welcome to RRN Amy! I am so happy to have you with us today! Amy is the first entrant into the current blog giveaway contest here at RRN. She’s hoping to win a signed copy of Teresa Medeiros’ Some Like it Wicked. Below is her review of Teresa Medeiros’ novel Yours Until Dawn.

Hi everyone! I’m Amy and I decided to review Teresa Medeiros’s Yours Until Dawn, for the blog giveaway contest. This Regency set novel follows the troubles of a blind lord and a plain miss as they journey toward love. I really enjoyed this novel and quite loved everything about it from Gabriel’s angry bear behavior to Samantha’s waspish retorts. I would have given the novel five stars except for the ending, which I won’t spoil, but I was unsatisfied even though it was a HEA (happily ever after).

Naval war hero and English Earl, Gabriel Fairchild was blinded in his last battle at sea. A flying piece of shrapnel hit his eyes, forcing this proud man into acute darkness. The doctors say it’s permanent – well all but one who thinks it might be hysterical blindness. However, the very idea of a grown man like Fairchild having hysterics is hard to imagine.

Miss March, Gabriel’s sweetheart, leaves him lying alone in the hospital bed with a gasp of frightened sensibilities. The shrapnel has done more than take his eyesight, it has also taken his looks. Angry and hurt at her flight, Gabriel retreats to the countryside and terrorizes everyone around him for the abandonment of his family and of his love.

The novel starts with the tart Samantha Wickersham applying for the job of being Gabriel’s nurse. She finds the task eagerly handed to her despite her lack of solid references and immediately sets to work ignoring all of Gabriel’s blustering. Reeking of lemon verbena, capable prim Miss Wickersham sets about taming the wounded man hiding behind the lion façade.

Not unexpectedly, she wins his heart, but complications arise and she is forced to flee. Gabriel must find the woman of his dreams before it is too late – but how does one find a woman one has never seen?

4 Stars

Review: The Sheikh’s Disobedient Bride by Jane Porter

Cara Lynn writes to us her first romance novel review in response to the $10 gift card contest! RRN is very happy to have her with us today! If you would like to win a copy of a book by the author of this novel please see the end of the post for more information.

It’s pretty unfair for me to review this book, as this genre isn’t my particular favorite. However, they do get published!

When Tally finds herself kidnapped by Sheikh Tair, a fierce desert warrior, she comes up against the proverbial immovable mountain. I am not surprised. Tally is a photographer, and she has taken some compromising photos, or they could be. And not only that, her translators are more than they appeared, as they are enemies of the Sheikh. He isn’t at all convinced that she is innocent. However, he is more than willing to put her into his harem and to test her loyalties more than once.

She is determined to escape, but not knowing the land, finds herself in dangerous situations, where she needs to be rescued. And you guessed it, by Tair.

Ultimately, the Sheikh marries her (as you can tell by the title) and they fall in love – or do they. Perhaps they fall in lust. As in many Harlequin books, there are banter and arguments, but underneath it is respect for the man who is always wealthy and rich. Let’s face it, who would put up with these attitudes if he weren’t! The woman is always denigrated to an extent, which grates on me after a while – or from the beginning. It seems like an intelligent woman would use that intelligence to discern what kind of man the man is and not waste her breath on verbally fighting him. Of course, part of that is supposed to be sexual tension. How to rate the sex in this book? I didn’t feel like they had any chemistry. But that’s just me. Perhaps you did. I appreciate the fact that the sex is not crude. On the other hand, she doesn’t think she’s in love with him. And on the other hand, she is not a virgin, so she knows the ropes. And they both think the sex is great.

If you want a mindless read, or if this is your genre, you will enjoy this book. I’d have preferred it, if she had determined how he governed, what his daily life was like, what the issues of survival were, how she could contribute if she were his consort. (I can’t see her ruling.) Because she is less than prepared along these lines, she finds herself kidnapped by the men who had been her translators. She is rescued in about a page. I think this could have been extended too, over some of the other things in the book. But it fits the genre. After all, the Sheikh’s mother is from the West and married his father in similar circumstances. Perhaps one of the earlier Sheikh books by another author tells the generic story of their meeting.

Rating: 1.5 Stars
